The visual language of Prehistoric Planet: Ice Age was dictated by the rules of natural history filmmaking. In this behind-the-scenes, Framestore team details the physical and technical constraints adopted to ensure authenticity in every frame.
To give our camera operators real-world reference points in untouched environments, production teams hiked custom-built physical puppets into remote Arctic locations. This physical approach allowed filmmakers to capture authentic camera drifts, subtle focus pulls, and observational framing; providing the documentary camera language needed for our animation and VFX teams to build upon.
In this video:
0:00 - Setting the Natural History Visual Tone (Russell Dodgson)
0:45 - Extreme Location Filming & Arctic Conditions
1:40 - Crafting Custom On-Set Reference Puppets (Brian Fisher)
2:30 - Documentary Camerawork & On-Set Interaction
3:35 - Restraint in Visual Effects Integration
Congratulations to our Emmy Nominees:
Russell Dodgson, Benjamin Loch, Francois Dumoulin, Romain Rico, Gavin McKenzie, Alvise Avati, Adrien Annesley, and Liam Russell.
