Framestore’s Pre-Production Services (FPS) team provided previs for the entire third season of the critically acclaimed docuseries Prehistoric Planet: Ice Age, helping establish the visual language of a prehistoric world long before production began.
Working closely with the filmmakers, FPS was tasked with balancing engaging storytelling, documentary-style authenticity and scientific accuracy. Reimagining extinct creatures through the lens of a natural history series required the team to rethink traditional layout and staging, treating every CG sequence as though it had been captured by a wildlife camera crew observing behaviour in the wild.
The previs was a monumental undertaking, with FPS creating more than 1,600 unique shots across the season in just nine months, laying the structural foundations for every episode before a single background plate was filmed on location.
Herein, you’ll see how FPS helped shape the series’ key sequences, establishing camera language, creature behaviour and storytelling beats that guided the production from concept through to final execution.
