The Golden Age (L'Âge d'Or) Directed by Bérenger Thouin (2026)
The Golden Age weaves an original fictional narrative directly into authentic twentieth-century archival footage, creating a unique cinematic language where documentary and fiction become one.
With around thirty archival sequences integrated into the film, this ambitious project called for a highly hybrid approach to visual effects. Rather than relying on a single technique, each shot was approached individually, combining traditional compositing, 2D face replacement, deep learning and AI-assisted workflows, alongside meticulous paint, tracking and digital artistry.
The process also began long before post-production. Close collaboration between the director, cinematographer Martin Roux, VFX Supervisor Hugues Namur and The Mill teams helped shape the visual language of the film from its earliest stages. Carefully choreographed reference performances with Souheila Yacoub, combined with practical on-set solutions and extensive archival research, were essential to bringing these moments to life.
The challenge was not simply to place a fictional character into historical footage, but to make her feel as though she had always been there. A collaboration between filmmaking, technology and craftsmanship, pushing the boundaries between archive and fiction while preserving the authenticity of the past.
