Digital Domain proudly contributed nearly 400 VFX shots to Marvel Studios' “The Fantastic Four: First Steps,” helping bring Marvel’s First Family to life in a vibrant retro-futuristic world. Led by VFX Supervisor Jan Philip Cramer, the team focused on five key characters, most notably The Thing and Baby Franklin, as well as all of the story-driving sequences set in the Baxter Building. Leveraging their proprietary markerless facial capture technology, Masquerade3, the Digital Domain team developed new workflows, including the largest application to date of this innovative system. The tool enabled seamless collaboration across multiple VFX and postvis vendors, and helped the team deliver over 300 shots of The Thing.
For Baby Franklin, Digital Domain combined advanced facial capture and digital doubles to create both newborn and toddler versions of the character, contributing to over 150 shots. Additional contributions included early development of Invisible Woman’s invisibility effects, Human Torch’s dynamic fire, and the full creation of HERBIE. Digital Domain’s assets also featured prominently in trailers and marketing materials.
