This combined VFX breakdown presents the work created for Rise of the Raven, a ten-episode Hungarian–Austrian historical series depicting the Siege of Belgrade in 1456—a defining moment in European history that gave rise to the tradition of church bells ringing at noon. Across the season, more than 1,400 VFX shots were produced, including 500 shots dedicated to the final Battle of Belgrade in episode ten.
The breakdown explores the creation of key environments such as Hunyad Castle, Edirne Palace, and Buda Castle, each designed to reflect a distinct emotional and historical identity—from idealized grandeur to lived-in brutality. Built in close collaboration with the Art Department, these locations combine historically informed design with full CG and digitally extended practical sets to achieve cinematic scale and authenticity.
It also covers the series’ four large-scale battle sequences, where CG crowds, bespoke FX, and environment interaction were used to convey clarity, momentum, and narrative weight. The Battle of Várna is presented through a flashback-driven structure, revealing a strong character parallel between John Hunyadi and the Ottoman leader. The finale at Belgrade showcases the largest technical challenge, featuring vast armies, evolving battlefield destruction, and an environment spanning eight square kilometers, carefully planned and executed to reflect both historical accuracy and story progression.
Together, the work highlights a collaborative VFX effort focused on grounding epic scale in character, history, and emotional storytelling.
