Milk worked on several key visual effects sequences for 47 Ronin. One of their earliest assignments was to create the Tengu ghost spirits that inhabit the mystical Tengu Forest. These supernatural entities were designed to guide Kai (Keanu Reeves) toward the legendary Tengu Swords—mystical weapons essential to the Ronin's quest for vengeance.
Among Milk’s standout contributions was the creation of the ‘Lovecraftian Samurai’—a spectral warrior who meets a spectacular end in a memorable stereoscopic 3D explosion.
In addition to character work, the team crafted a detailed matte painting of the Tengu Forest, originally based on a 2D plate, and then transformed it into a fully immersive 3D environment. They also designed eerie, organic ‘Tengu Pods’ that emit a strange vapor—out of which the spirits materialize. These pods not only bring the spirits to life but also trigger vivid hallucinations in the Ronin.
