It takes a village to raise a dragon.
Reimagining Toothless for Dean DeBlois’ live-action adaptation of How To Train Your Dragon presented numerous creative and technical challenges. Foremost amongst them was how to make him a living, breathing creature without sacrificing the spark and charm of his original animated incarnation.
Bringing him to life relied on hundreds of artists and technologists working across a wide range of practical and digital crafts. In this short film, we explore early animation and visual development, real-world references and the use of both on-set puppetry and our cutting-edge Farsight Go AR system, which helped inform and frame the action by placing the dragons in the ‘real’ world.
In this short film you’ll hear from Director Dean DeBlois, Production VFX Supervisor Christian Mänz, Production Animation Supervisor Glen McIntosh, VFX Supervisor Andy Kind and Animation Supervisor Kayn Garcia as the explain the development process, from early animation and visual development tests to real-world references and the use of both on-set puppetry and Framestore Pre-production Services’ cutting edge Farsight Go AR system.
