These effects are often created with a combination of 2D and 3D elements. For flames, in order to convincingly replicate the random nature of a true inferno, details like embers, smoke, and rogue flames are meticulously simulated. The physics of fire is also accounted for. The source, such as wood, gasoline, paper, different kinds of explosives, etc. inform details like the density, temperature, buoyancy, break-up, and lifetime of the fire and smoke. All of these attributes and more are considered and modified to achieve the desired effect. Explosions go beyond a fireball and mushroom cloud as well. Sound and shock waves, along with debris and rigid body dynamics (RBD) work together to achieve the appearance of destruction and objects being ripped apart. Each element is critical to a believable impact on an environment.
