Here we explore more incredible VFX from two great movies:

Kong: Skull Island

Rodeo FX was responsible for helping to create the drastically different CG environments that can be seen in 'Kong: Skull Island'.

During the prologue, the effects team actually blew up a full-scale P-51 fighter at a beach location in Australia. Then all Rodeo FX had to do was add some sand and smoke elements. They also took ILM's CG backgrounds and rendered them as flat images, to be able to then map them to 360º HDRI spheres.
The CG artists at Rodeo then added foliage, haze and smoke and made the scene look like it took place during magic hour, the time of day when the setting sun is at its most golden.

Rodeo also developed a digital treatment to replicate the grainy 16 mm look of the TV footage, which they slowly faded out as the shot transitions to the film’s present time.

Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle

In this movie, Iloura faced some tough challenges as the chase sequence in which the cast are trapped in a ravine with a damaged helicopter and then are chased after by a herd of stampeding albino rhinos was admittedly one of the most complex sequences in Iloura’s history.

VFX Supervisor Glenn Melenhorst explained how there were millions of pebbles, leaves, litter, trees, rocks and boulders that would all have to interact, not only with the stomping stampede of fully CG rhinos, but also with the wind and smoke whipped up by the fully CG helicopter, not to mention the occasional digital double of the cast.

It was a monster sequence.
